Engines

Background

Heavy fuel Engines, Incorporated is the vision of Evan Guy. With over 11 years of intense heavy fuel engine development, and three U.S. Patents to his credit, Mr. Guy is uniquely qualified in the heavy fuel UAV arena. He has worked on major UAV engine programs dating back to Aquila in 1986, and was involved in a major R&D effort sponsored by the U.S Navy. His work has focused principally on fuel and combustion system development and optimization, and Mr. guy has created numerous prototypes to test various heavy fuel concepts.

HF1 & Merlin UAV

In 1998, after testing man experimental prototypes over a 6-year period, Mr. Guy produced a single-cylinder, two-cycle "bench" engine which ran very well. So well, in fact, it was mounted to the Merlin UAV airframe in a joint effort with Mission Technologies and Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) and flown successfully on three occasions. The 240cc HF1 engine produces 100HP/liter with no visible smoke, and exhibits favorable BSFC values and excellent reliability characteristics. The success of the HF1 was the basis for development of the Spectre twin engine.
